Balmoral Castle the backdrop to the race

Ruth Fancies a Balmoral Challenge - 30 March 2011

Ruth Mackenzie, a member of Deeside Runners, has signed up for the new event which will be held on Sunday 24th April - 24 hours after the Stena Drilling Tartan 10Km, the ConocoPhillips 5km, the Kongsberg Maritime Secondary Schools 2.5Km and the MTM Primary Schools 1.5Km.

Ruth originally planned to do the 10Km but had second thoughts and opted for the half marathon.

She said:"I've done the  10Km a few times, so it's good that there's a new event to try this year.

"I'm looking forward to it, especially as it takes you off the roads and into the estate."

Ruth knows the trails and tracks around Balmoral very well, as she trains there on a regular basis.

That local knowledge, combined with her hill running skills, could make her difficult to beat over the testing course.

Veteran Dundee runner Morag Taggart has also joined the growing list of experienced runners tackling the Petrofac Challenge.

Morag has been one of Scotland's most durable distance runners over the past 25-30 years.  She won the women's division of the Moray marathon in 1985 and was still competitive enough to finish in third position last year.

She was also three-times a bronze medallist in the Aberdeen marathon (in 1983, 1984 and 1986).
