Balmoral Races Announce Extensive Prize List - 7 March 2012

Trips to Ethiopia, big cash prizes and record-breaking bonuses are all being offered in this year's Balmoral road races over the weekend of 28th and 29th April.

The first man and woman in the Petrofac Challenge 15 mile multi-terrain race will each earn a trip to a major road race in Ethiopia.

This is one of the biggest and best prizes ever offered at a north east running event. The winners will travel to one of the world's greatest distance running nations to take part in the race and its almost certain that they will meet the legendary Haile Gebrselassie.

Gebrselassie, who has won four world titles and set 27 world records during a long and glittering career, hopes to compete in the marathon at this year's London Olympics where he aims to add to the gold medals he won in the 10,000m at the 1996 and 2000 Games.

The Stena Drilling Tartan 10Km offers a top cash prize of £250 for the first man and woman but those sums can be doubled if the winners break the course records.

The standard to beat in the men's competition is the 31min 23sec set by Robert Russell in 2007 while the women's mark is 36:23 recorded by Lyn Wilson in 2006

The race also offers prizes for the first kilted finishers in both the men's and women's divisions.

It's a similar story in the ConocoPhillips 5Km in which the men's and women's winners will each pocket £150 but that too can be doubled by breaking the existing records.

The men's standard of 15min 13sec was recorded by Ben Hukins last year while, on the same day, Fiona Thompson set the fastest women's time of 17min 46sec.

The full prize list is as listed below. Runners can receive only one prize (other than kilted runners in the 10Km - see below)
