Russell Confirms Balmoral Appearance - 1 March 2011
Aberdeen-based Scottish international Robert Russell has confirmed he'll be returning to Balmoral Castle on 23rd April to compete in the Stena Drilling Tartan 10Km. Russell, who is coached by legendary Scottish distance running champion Liz McColgan, set a Balmoral course record of 31min 23sec on his only other appearance on Deeside in 2007.
If he can win the race and improve on that time he stands to pick up a top prize of £500 as the organisers have offered a bonus for a new record. Russell said:"I had originally planned to do the London marathon in April but now I'm more likely to do an autumn one, probably Berlin.
"That means I'd now be able to run at Balmoral."
Russell, a former Scottish cross country champion, certainly has the credentials to produce a fast performance as his best time for the distance is 29:17 set at Stirling in 2008. He faces some strong opposition, however, with Caithness runner Andrew Douglas (Inverclyde AC) coming back to defend the title he won last year.
Douglas recorded 32:01 at Balmoral in 2010, but he has since improved his best time to 29:46 at Stirling last September.
The 2009 winner, Keith Hood (Corstorphine AAC) has also confirmed he'll be competing again as will City of Aberdeen Baker Hughes 10Km champion Ben Hukins. (Aberdeen AAC).
Great Britain mountain running international Robbie Simpson (Deeside Runners) will also be a contender in what is the best quality field for many years.
