Balmoral Castle the backdrop to the race

Top Twins Head for Balmoral - 31 January 2011

Caithness twins Emma and Oonagh Dunnett are the latest top young athletes to sign up for the Balmoral road races. The 15 year-old Thurso High School pupils, who come from Reay, will compete in the ConocoPhillips 5Km on 23rd April.

Emma and Oonagh both compete for Edinburgh AC and in January they helped their club win the East of Scotland cross country league title. Emma won the individual gold medal and Oonagh was bronze medallist. Both girls have represented Scotland and they are rated amongst the country's best young distance running prospects.

Emma, who won the 2010 Scottish under-15 road running title, will be making her 5Km debut, but she has an impressive 10Km best time of 38min 10sec which was set when finishing sixth in last year's Loch Ness race.
Oonagh is also competing over 5Km for the first time, but she too has raced over longer distances and clocked 42:03 over the testing Bupa Great Edinburgh 10Km route last summer.

Over 300 runners have already signed up for the ConocoPhillips race which has a capacity of 1,000 places. Entry numbers are well ahead of last year's figures at the same date.

In addition to the 5Km, the Balmoral race day programme also includes the Stena Drilling Tartan 10Km, the Kongsberg Maritime secondary schools 2.5Km and the McIntosh Plant Hire primary schools 1.5Km.
Entries for the 10Km are now approaching the 1,700 mark which suggests all 2,500 places could be taken up very soon.
