Apollo ready for lift off at Balmoral - exciting new event for 2015 - 17 June 2014
An exciting new event has been added to the RunBalmoral programme of races for 2015 with Aberdeen-based offshore engineering consultancy and project management provider Apollo coming on board to sponsor a 30km duathlon.
The Balmoral festival of running is one of the biggest and most popular meetings in the country and already attracts more than 5,000 people of all ages who enjoy taking part in the Stena Drilling 10km, ConocoPhillips 5km, Kongsberg Maritime secondary schools 2.5km and McIntosh Plant Hire primary schools 1.5km races.
Now competitors can look forward to a new racing opportunity. The duathlon is to feature a challenging 5km run, followed by a dramatic 20km mountain biking stage before finishing off with a second 5km run around a specially designed course through the spectacular grounds of the royal estate.
It promises to be a thrilling event offering spectators the chance to watch the race unfold through each of the three stages and it will certainly bring a new dimension to the Balmoral meeting which is scheduled for the weekend of 25th and 26th April 2015.S
RunBalmoral Chairman James Knowles is delighted with the new initiative which he believes will enhance the already highly popular Deeside event. He said: “This promises to be a fantastic addition to our already varied programme of races. Apollo came to us with the idea and we were only too happy to take it on board.”
“RunBalmoral is evolving and developing all the time and the Apollo duathlon will complement our other races perfectly. It is certainly an exciting step forward and I am sure it will be tremendously successful.”
200 places will be available in the inaugural race but this is expected to be expanded in future years. Entries will be opened up, along with entries for all the other Balmoral races, in September. Knowles added: “I am sure the duathlon places will be snapped up very quickly, as is the case with most of our races. I’d urge everyone to keep an eye on our website www.runbalmoral.com for further details in due course.”
Apollo Managing Director Jonathan D’Arcy is equally excited about the event. He said: “ It’s a great honour to have the Apollo brand associated with the hugely successful RunBalmoral weekend. Not only are we looking forward to being part of the weekend of events but also taking part as well! It promises to be a thrilling sporting event and good fun for the spectators too.”
